Zuni Cafe in San Francisco
I recently discovered this list of good eats in San Francisco by 7×7. It’s called The 2010 Big Eat SF: 100 Things to Try Before You Die and I’m determined to try each one of these! I went to Zuni Cafe this past weekend with my best friend, Christine, and tried the roast chicken and bread salad.
Zuni is a two-story, corner cafe on Market St. They offer valet service for $10.00 but street parking is available. I took the BART to Civic Center and walked 10 minutes to reach the place. The location is small and space is limited. This means wait times are longer during peak hours. Christine and I arrived around 2PM, and there was no line.
According to the 7×7 list, we had to try the roast chicken and bread salad, so of course we ordered that. The good thing is this dish serves two. The bad is it takes 1 full hour to cook and serve. We received a few slices of sourdough bread and butter that we ate while we waited for the chicken. It also gave us time to catch up.
The roasted chicken was really good. The chicken was cut into 8 different pieces, served in a large bowl with chopped sourdough bread, greens, pine nuts, raisins, and some type of vinaigrette dressing. The sourdough bread was lightly toasted and a great combination with the chicken. The greens were sparse and I wish it came with more greens to eat with the bread. The chicken was delicious: quality pieces, crispy skin and juicy meat. I’d recommend it if you have an hour to spare. For dessert, Christine and I shared the honey date ice cream with waffle cookies . The dessert was served with two scoops of ice cream and two waffle cookies. The cookies were really good and reminded me of butter cookies, but the ice cream was mediocre. It was very milky but wasn’t anything spectacular.
Overall, I had a yummy and tasty meal at Zuni Cafe. I’m glad I tried it and definitely agree it is a great eatery in SF. However, I don’t think the 1 hour wait for the chicken was worth it and probably won’t go back for it. Nonetheless, for those who are looking for good chicken, Zuni Cafe is a good place to try. Menus and prices are posted on its website.

That looks amazing!
If I am ever over there I’ll check it out, was it expensive? Just trying to gauge the difference in eating out compared to London

Even though it is a cafe, I would imagine that this particular roast chicken is on the more expensive side compared to others restaurants in the San Francisco. How much do things cost in London?

Presentation was definitely good.
It was around $48 for the chicken dish. This is pretty expensive for chicken.

For a drink and a mid-day meal (depending where you eat but lets say somewhere half decent) you would easy hit close to $30 for a three course meal with drink you would be hitting $70-100 easy per person

I agree that you have to be prepared to wait an hour for the chicken–it’s not for everybody! But it is very delicious. I just love Zuni overall–I think it’s a beautiful restaurant and the rest of the menu is great.

It is a beautiful restaurant! I like the big, long windows. It makes the place feel very spacious. I haven’t tried anything else at Zuni… any recommendations?
