Had the opportunity to go whitewater rafting in Coloma (near Sacramento, California). A group of seven friends met at Mariah Wilderness Expeditions for a half day trip (~$100/person) on the South Fork of the American River. The most intense rapid along the route is a Class 3.

After meeting at 12:00 noon, after a quick 30 minute on-land introduction, and a even quicker 15 minute on-water practice, we were ready to head down the river. The three most intense rapids (all class 3) were named Satan’s Cesspool, Hospital Bar, and Recovery Room. A unique rapid is called Bouncing Rock, where the raft rams into a smooth rock before sliding backwards. Along the way, there are several chances to voluntarily jump into the river.

Hospital Bar Rapid that smashed the raft! Most intense Rapid of the trip.

We got off the river around 3:40pm and back to the camp at 4:00pm. On this trip, we had no issues with the raft (ie, flipping or ripping). Essential to bring are water shoes (or non slip-on sandals), DryFit (non cotton shirt), sunblock, water, and perhaps a hat. I brought a digital camera kept in two zip-lock bags for pictures in the calmer sections, but we also had the option to purchase digital professional pictures (burned to a DVD) from two rapids for $75. Overall, the trip was a complete blast and I am ready for a Class 5 rapid!
